Congrats to Yan and Gabe who did a great job presenting their research at the BMES 2011 Meeting in Hartford, CT.
Yan presented a poster entitled “Engineering Anisotropic Myotubes Using Micropatterned Extracellular Matrix Proteins,” with co-author Ashley Lee.
Gabe presented a poster entitled “Strain-To-Failure of Extracellular Matrix Protein Nanofibers,” with co-authors Billy Littlefield and John Szymanski.
Congratulations to Quentin Jallerat, who has been awarded a Dowd-ICES Graduate Student Fellowship for the 2011-2012 academic year. The Philip and Marsha Dowd Engineering Seed Fund was established in 2001 through a generous gift to the College of Engineering (CIT) from Philip (B.S. Materials Science and Engineering, 1963) and Marsha Dowd. This fellowship grant program, administered through ICES, provides support for graduate students working on cutting edge research projects which do not have other sources of funding.
The Dowd Innovation Seed Fund, http://www.dowdseedfund.com/, is specifically designed to foster innovative new ideas at CMU.

As part of the conference “Vision Restoration: Regenerative Medicine in Ophthalmology” in May, Rachelle interviewed Dr. Graziella Pellegrini regarding her research into regeneration of the corneal surface. The video is available on the Louis J. Fox Center for Vision Restoration website.
Prof. Feinberg is a Co-PI on a recently awarded instrumentation grant for an Asylum Research MFP-3D BIO atomic force microscope integrated with an inverted fluorescent microscope. This instrument will be located in PTC and provide exciting new capability to probe the structure and mechanics of polymeric and biological samples, including protein-based materials.
Welcome to Nina Kloss and Kevin Frankola, visiting undergraduate researchers for the summer working on 3-D rapid prototyping of tissue engineered constructs.
A team of faculty from MSE and BME led by Adam wins a Carnegie Mellon internal infrastructure grant to acquire a Nikon AZ100 C2 confocal microscope. This equipment will enable 3-D imaging of biological samples, engineered tissues and protein-based materials from low to high magnification. CMU faculty interested in using this equipment should contact Adam.
A warm welcome to the great group of undergraduates joining us for the summer. Brooke Gladstone is working on corneal regeneration, Billy Littlefield is working on collagen IV nanofibers, Iris Young is characterizing the structure of protein nanofibers and Nina Kloss is working of 3-D printing of biomaterials.
Congratulations to Ashley Lee, who received her Masters of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering on May 15, 2011. Ashley will be continuing on in the lab this summer working on muscle tissue engineering.
